This following letter was written by Private Arthur Jones prior to leaving for Dieppe...
August 16, 1942,
Dear, my love, Lela
It has been two years now since I left for Britain. I hope everyone is doing well back home. Sorry for not sending much letters home, love. Everthing has been hectic in my camp recently, with the news of Russia being invaded by the Germans, and Japan attacking America. Do not be worried about the enemies reaching home. I am training alongside many great, strong men. We all have something we are fighting for back home. I am confident this strength will guide us to victory! We are all protecting each other so do not ever think that I am alone. Now, on to he more important news, I am writing to let you know that I will be leaving to my first battle in Dieppe in about two days. I have never been to France. I am excited, however, I have never been the nervous. Perhaps it is because this will be my first battle? Whatever the case is, there should be no reason for you to get upset my dear. Many troops are coming. Our attack is planned to surprise the Germans as well. I think that there is a good chance I will survive. With the Americans fighting as well now, expect the war to end soon. I have so many stories to tell you once I return home love! until the, you and Audrey stay well. Sincerely yours, Arthur
